In ceramics, “seconds” refers to ceramic pieces that are imperfect or flawed, but still functional. These items didn’t meet the maker’s quality standards to be sold as “firsts” (perfect pieces), often due to minor issues such as:

• Small glaze defects (pinholes, drips, uneven coverage)
• Slight warping or cracking
• Minor blemishes in the shape or surface
• Firing irregularities (e.g., color variation)
